Sail sculpture by Denise Pipkin
The sails are a nostalgic reminiscence towards the beauty of a tall ship. Crisp white sails elegantly tensioned to full flight, efficiently designed with all components being visible and highly functional.
The frameworks, currently aluminium, are formed into sweeping curves which reflect my interest in contemporary architecture, particularly structures engineered using tension loaded systems to create spanning canopies.
The works of Frei Otto and Santiago Calatrava are inspirational to me in this field.
Combining natural forms, tensile strength with elements of light and space allow the frameworks and sails to harmoniously function as one. These simplistic qualities will evoke clarity, tranquil associations and a sense of calm.
